I take great pleasure in delivering this message to the citizens and businesses of the Alvin-Manvel area. The Chamber’s commitment to serve its members by promoting economic growth and active partnerships with business and community are vital in these times of anxious and unprecedented uncertainties. In truth, I am reminded of the reputed old Chinese proverb and curse that reads “May you live in interesting times”…because we are certainly living in interesting times.
However, as we have learned from history, challenges will create opportunities, and that’s what we have before us – Opportunities to build our businesses and lead our communities.
While a couple of the past year’s events – Hurricane Ike and the economic volatility – have created some challenges, I believe the Alvin-Manvel area communities are positioned to embrace these challenges and seize the opportunities. Our communities are equipped with many advantages and assets.
- We have talented individuals within our community that care about the community and are devoted to leading in a positive direction.
- We have citizens who will adjust to take care of family needs.
- We have businesses that will pay close attention to the fundamentals.
- We have learned lessons in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
- We have formed solid partnerships with local government and other entities.
- We demonstrate teamwork throughout many endeavors in the community.
- We adapt to changing conditions to promote the business environment.
- We have maintained our focus on quality of life.
- We are deeply rooted in the traditions that have served us well.
- We foster diversity which has paved the way for growth and development.
- But most of all, we are communities that are willing to act…Together.
In utilizing resources throughout the Alvin-Manvel area, our businesses and communities will flourish.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve as your 2009 Chairman of the Board. I take tremendous pride in serving as your chairman, and look forward to working with the chamber staff and the many volunteers in our great communities.
Sincerely,

John Barron
